OpenAI Acquires Promptfoo to Embed Advanced Red-Teaming into Frontier Platform
Mar 9, 2026 // 23:23 - Lina Schonbein

OpenAI has announced that it is acquiring Promptfoo, an AI security and evaluation platform designed to help developers and enterprises secure large language model (LLM) applications.

Integration with OpenAI Frontier

Following the acquisition, OpenAI plans to integrate Promptfoo’s technology directly into OpenAI Frontier, its platform for building and operating autonomous “AI coworkers.” This move is intended to:

  • Automate Red-Teaming: Embed security testing directly into development workflows to catch risks like prompt injections, jailbreaks, and data leaks before deployment.
  • Secure Agentic Workflows: Provide specialized tools to test independent AI agents that interact with real-world data and external systems.
  • Ensure Compliance: Add reporting and traceability features to help enterprise customers meet governance, risk, and compliance (GRC) requirements.

Impact on the Open Source Community

Promptfoo is well-known for its widely used open-source CLI and library, which is currently trusted by over 25% of Fortune 500 companies. OpenAI has stated it will continue to develop and support the open-source project alongside its new enterprise-specific capabilities.

Background on Promptfoo

  • Leadership: The startup was founded in 2024 by Ian Webster (former LLM engineering lead at Discord) and Michael D’Angelo.
  • Funding: Before the acquisition, Promptfoo had raised approximately $23 million, including a Series A round led by Insight Partners in July 2025 that valued the company at $86 million.
  • Financials: The specific financial terms of the OpenAI acquisition have not been disclosed.
